The original photo was taken by George Burke in 1937, but this card was produced some time later (no earlier than the 1950's judging by the standard Kodak back). Comes from a large collection of such postcards that we will be listing over the coming months, all having standard postcard backs but being postally unused. Wear on these, if any, is mostly confined to minor corner and edge wear, but see scans for further details including condition. We do not deal in stock images or modern reprints, and all scans shown are of the actual item being sold. If you have any questions about a particular piece, please ask before the auction ends.

BIO: Henry Emmett Manush was born in 1901 in Tuscumbia, AL and died in 1971 in Sarasota, FL. He played major league baseball from 1923 to 1939 as outfielder for the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox, Brooklyn Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates, appeared in the 1933 World Series, was selected in 1934 as an All-Star, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964. Manush was perhaps most famous for a couple close batting races. In 1926 he beat Babe Ruth, trailing Ruth before the last day of the season but making up for it with a big day in a doubleheader. In 1928 he lost the title by one point to Goose Goslin, for whom he would later be traded. He was also third behind Lew Fonseca in 1929, second behind Jimmie Foxx in 1933, and third behind Lou Gehrig in 1934. After his major league playing career ended, Manush was a minor league player-manager in the Boston Red Sox chain from 1940 to 1944, managing the Rocky Mount Red Sox (1940), the Greensboro Red Sox (1941-42), the Roanoke Red Sox (1943), and the Scranton Miners (1944). In 1945, he managed the Philadelphia Athletics' Class C team, the Martinsville A's in the Carolina League. He then served as a Washington Senators coach in 1953 and 1954 and scout for the new Senators franchise in 1961-1962.
