BIO: Joseph John Mathes was born in 1891 in Milwaukee, WI and died in 1978 in St. Louis, MO. He played major league baseball from 1912 to 1916 as 2nd and 3rd baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics, St. Louis Terriers and the Boston Braves. After his major league days he managed for about a decade, and The Memoirs of Bing Devine says he ran the Cardinals minor league operations as well.
