BIO: Edward Mayo Smith was born in New London, MO and died in 1977 in Boynton Beach, FL. He played major league baseball for a single season in 1945 as outfielder for the Philadelphia Athletics. He went on to manage teams including the Philadelphia Athletics, Cincinnati Reds and the Detroit Tigers. The best-known Tigers fan club was named the Mayo Smith Society in his memory by its members.
