BIO: Michael Jack Schmidt was born in 1949 in Dayton, OH and went to college at Ohio University. He played major league baseball from 1972 to 1989 as 3rd baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies, appeared in the 1980 and 1983 World Series, was selected 12 times as an All-Star, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995. Schmidt was the American League MVP in 1980, 1981 and 1986, and earned 10 Gold Glove Awards and 6 Silver Sluggers over the course of his career. Schmidt always credited his superstition of eating 3 pieces of buttered wheat toast before every game (unless it was a double-header, in which case he wouldn't have any) for his success at the plate.
