LATE ARRIVAL

New York Giants' second sacker Davey Williams finds Ken Boyer, Chicago third baseman, waiting with the ball as he slides into third during the first inning of the opening game of a doubleheader at the Polo Grounds. Williams was out trying to advance from second on Willie Mays' fly to centerfielder Pete Whisenant, who threw to Boyer. Giant manager Leo Durocher, coaching at third, and umpire Al Barlick watch the play.

BIO: David Carlous Williams was born in 1927 in Dallas, TX and died in 2009 in Farmer's Branch, TX. He played major league baseball from 1949 to 1955 as 2nd baseman for the New York Giants, appeared in the 1951 and 1954 World Series, and was selected in 1953 as an All-Star. He was a Giants coach after his career ended, and he was a player-manager for Dallas in 1958.

Kenton Lloyd Boyer was born in 1931 in Liberty, MO and died in 1982 in St.Louis, MO. He played major league baseball from 1955 to 1969 as 3rd baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers, appeared in the 1964 World Series, and was selected 7 times as an All-Star. Boyer was the 1964 National League MVP as well as Major League Player of the Year that year. The brother of Clete Boyer, Cloyd Boyer, Len Boyer and Ron Boyer, Ken Boyer spent two seasons as a St. Louis Cardinals coach and two and a half as their manager, finishing as high as third in 1979.

Leo Ernest Durocher (The Lip) was born in West Springfield, MA and died in 1991 in Palm Springs, CA. He played major league baseball from 1925 to 1945 as shortstop for the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals and the Brooklyn Dodgers, appeared in the 1928 and 1934 World Series, was selected 3 times as an All-Star, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994. Durocher managed the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1939-46 and 1948, the New York Giants from 1948-55, the Chicago Cubs from 1966-72, and the Houston Astros from 1972-73.

Albert Joseph Barlick was born in 1915 in Springfield, IL and died in 1995 in Springfield, IL. He went to college at Centenary College of Louisiana, Louisiana State University. Barlick began his career in the Northeast Arkansas League in 1936. He worked the Piedmont League in 1937-1938, and the Eastern League in 1939. Barlick moved up to the International League in June, 1939 through 1940, making his major league debut in September 1940. A National League umpire from 1940 to 1970, Al Barlick worked seven World Series and seven All-Star Games. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on February 28, 1989 by the Committee on Baseball Veterans.
